• URGENT -SCHOOL CLOSURE TOMORROW (FRIDAY 18TH FEB)

  Having reviewed the latest weather forecast and weather advice, which predicts dangerous levels of winds, particularly over school drop off times, we have made the decision to close the school tomorrow, Friday 18th February. In the interests of the safety of our children and families and also our staff, many of whom travel a considerable distance to school, this is the safest option for all. In addition, many staff are now unable to attend work themselves due to their own children’s school closures and ratios of adults to children make opening unsafe.

  You will find some home learning on the school website and we will send further information about this in the morning.

  The school phone lines will not be operational tomorrow. For urgent messages please use the admin@blackpool.devon.sch.uk email address.

  Apologies for any inconvenience caused but safety must come first.

• Storm Eunice

  Dear Parent / Carer

   

  You will probably be aware of the weather warnings for Southwest England issued today by the Met Office, which is forecasting extremely strong winds overnight and into Friday.

   

  Storm Eunice, as this weather front is known, will be coming in overnight. Whilst winds will increase in velocity from 3.00 am tomorrow, the strongest winds are forecast to occur between 9.00 am and 12 noon tomorrow, when gusts of up to 80 mph may be experienced locally. Winds will drop from around the time that school finishes tomorrow, but speeds are likely to remain very high at 50-60mph until 9.00 pm Friday night.

   

  If you are dropping off/collecting your child tomorrow, please take extra care on the roads, particularly around pedestrians and cyclists.

   

  Please reinforce some key but simple reminders to your child to help them stay safe on their way to and from school tomorrow, including:

  · Take extra care when walking near roads, as sudden gust can easily blow pedestrians sideways and into roads.

  · Be particularly vigilant when crossing roads and be aware that conditions for motorists are very challenging.

  · Be aware of flying debris in high winds.

  · Do not shelter under trees or buildings where debris may fall in high winds.

  · Make sure you wear a coat and are appropriately dressed for the weather.

   

  In school:

  · We are working in line with our risk assessment for adverse weather conditions and planning ahead to ensure outdoor bins and the like are secured as far as possible. That work is underway today.

  · Students will be instructed to stay inside the school building during Break tomorrow if the winds are as strong as anticipated – we will monitor weather conditions throughout the day and respond accordingly.

  · We will continue to monitor local conditions throughout the day and keep families updated through email and social media should we need to respond to a worsening situation.

• Careers Fair Autumn 2021

  At Blackpool School, we are always thinking about how the knowledge and skills that our children are acquiring while with us, will impact and influence their lives beyond their primary setting. Our aim is that they will be well equipped to continue learning and pursue careers that they are passionate about.

  With this in mind, we hosted a careers fair for our Year 5 and 6 pupils so that they can begin to consider how the skills they are learning now, can be transferred into the next phase of their education and into a world of work. The key messages that we teach at this stage in their lives are to try their best in everything they do, to gain the best academic achievements and interpersonal skills possible, so that the possibilities for later careers can be maximised.

  Our fair included representatives from a wide range of careers, including a nurse, barrister, chef, author, illustrator, engineer and RAF navigator. The children enjoyed talking to them, to find out about the pathways to working in particular fields, and what skills and interests they can be gaining and considering, especially when moving on to secondary school at the end of the year.

  The children learnt many interesting facts about each job as well as the varied pathways that people can take to enter into a chosen career. The event was also successful in providing a great opportunity for considering the next stages of learning and promoted high aspirations for their future working lives.

  Thank you very much to all of the volunteers, who gave up their time and provide such engaging discussions and demonstrations with the children. This has helped to form a really important part of their personal development within our curriculum.

• FABS Massive 5000 Challenge

  The challenge was a massive success and has raised £8700 with Gift Aid donations! Which has gone above and beyond the amount needed for the intended playground project. This project is now underway and FABS are under discussion as to what the rest of the money will go towards. Well done to everyone to took part in the challenge and thank you to everyone who has helped contribute to the donations.

• World Book Day 2021

  We are really excited about World Book Day. We will be celebrating the day with various activities across the day for children both in school and at home. Each unit across the school will provide a range of reading related activities both in school and via Google Classroom for children at home to complete. We will stop our usual timetables for the day to celebrate. Children can wear World Book Day inspired fancy dress to school on Thursday 4th if they wish. Home learners, you can also join in the fancy dress fun, or perhaps wear your pjs to enjoy the day! Our school theme is Hopes and Dreams and we will be enjoying the fantastic picture book The book of Hopes which is an extraordinary collection of short stories, poems, essays and pictures, with more than 110 children’s writers and illustrators contributing. In addition to reading activities, staff will be sharing the contents of the book with children in school. It is available to access for free using this link:

• Remembrance Day Assembly

  Well done to Unit 2 who conducted an assembly for Remembrance Day, due to the current circumstances the assembly was recorded for parents to be able to watch at home. Thank you also to everyone who came to school in their Beavers, Brownies, and Scouts uniforms on the day. 

• Harvest Time at Blackpool Primary School

  Following our Harvest Assembly which was undertaken by Unit 1 and a recording emailed out to parents. Some of the donations we received were distributed to people of Liverton. Trish Windwmill kindly helped us to distribute these safely to those in our local community. The boxes were very gratefully received and many commented on how it was so lovely to still be remembered and supported even in these challenging times.  Thank you to everyone who donated.

• Children in Need

  On Friday 13th November the children came into school dressed in mufti and brought in donations to support Children in Need. We raised a total of £377.63! Thank you to everyone who donated towards a worthy cause.
