Unit 3 were Invited to join Devon farmers and other primary school children at Westpoint arena to take part in the ‘Farmwise’ event which demonstrated the food journey from field to plate.
The event was divided into different zones – dairy, beef, sheep, poultry, fruit, vegetable, arable, wildlife, and food and environmental – farmers passed on their knowledge and expertise and involved children in a range of fun and exciting activities allowing them to get a real touch, feel and smell of farming and farm production.
Children saw cows being milked, sheep being shorn, and learnt how local produce such as cheese and smoothies are made. Moreover the children were able to see how farming has an impact on the environment and surrounding wildlife.
It was fantastic to see the different animals and learn about about where our food comes from. Getting to make our own homemede sausages was a definite highlight for me - Fergus Retalik
Tasting the different vegetables and fruit on show was fun especially when we had to guess what they were! Jessica White
