Approach to Spoken Language and Oracy
We value Spoken Language as an important part of the children’s entitlement to a broad and balanced curriculum. Spoken Language provides the children with the opportunities to develop and extend skills and an opportunity to express their individual interests, thoughts and ideas. Spoken language is encouraged and promoted throughout the school day. The children are encouraged to explore ideas through talk; challenge each other’s opinions and develop their own reasoned arguments, as well as talking in full sentences with a clear and confident voice.
The implementation of Spoken Language is based on the Early Years Early Learning Goals and the National Curriculum. We use The Communication Trust’s ‘Communicating the Curriculum’ to implement the spoken language for years 1-6. We utilise The Voice 21 Oracy Frameworks to understand the physical, linguistic, cognitive and social and emotional skills that enable successful discussion, speech and communication.
Approach to Vocabulary
We recognise that children’s acquisition and command of vocabulary are key to their learning across the curriculum. We know that vocabulary acquisition is vital to ensure a good level of development and growth academically, socially and emotionally.
We utilise three key elements to the teaching of vocabulary:
1.Direction instruction of vocabulary across subjects and curriculums
2.Word learning strategies
3.Creating a language rich culture
